about

A sort-of remix album?

This album was a kind of snarky comment on the use of PaulStretch to create instant ambient smoosh, a method that was very much in fashion among underground ambient artists at the time I made this. There's nothing honestly wrong with doing that, no judgements here, knock yourselves out, any method of making music is valid. But I did kind of get annoyed by the ubiquity of the method and how similar all these releases sounded. I just wanted to see if an opposite method would be interesting. Maybe squeezing a long ass ambient song would make an instant pop song? Not exactly.

Not every song that I have squeezed for this remix was originally made with the PaulStretch method I described above, I just picked out longform ambient tracks at random.

This album was only available in mp3 format for a limited time in early 2013.

The original text written for the release is below:

Longform ambient is de rigueur in netlabels these days, especially now that the freeware application Paulstretch that makes it so easy to stretch short duration sounds into improbably lengthy ones.

For this project, I selected the first twenty-four longform ambient pieces I came across that were both free to download and licensed allowing for remixing / derivative works. Those twenty four tracks were time-squeezed down to somewhere around a minute each. No other processing was done to any of the pieces.

It would take over twenty six hours to listen to all of the original tracks I used as source material.

This idea came directly from something David Porter said. Credit and blame goes his direction.
